Backlinks are a big part of getting higher organic ranking in Google, Bing and Yahoo. It's not a secret, or trickery, rather its simply a method of obtaining accepted backlinks that Google will favor and consider natural. All sites should submit themselves to directories and it was one of the first ways to get a quality back link back in the day. They still work today, but they need to be Do Follow backlinks meaning Google will index your link off their site and count it as a back link. You are subject to Google No Following the directories pages thus losing the back link, but most of the directories we hand submit to are Do Follow and have held that status for years. Most free submissions take from 1-6 months on average to index, but over time they add up.
